PHYTOCHEMICAL EVALUATION OF PAWPAW PLANT LEAVES USING GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to evaluate the Phytochemical composition of pawpaw plant leaf extract using gas chromatographic method. Pawpaw leaves were randomly taken from a pawpaw tree grown in an abandoned plot of land at Eziama community, Aba, Abia State. The leaves were processed and analyzed using GC-MS detention system. The results showed the presence of Anthocyanin 9.84%, Tannin 22.23%, Epicatechin 9.84%, Flavone 9.85%, Phenol 7.23%, Phytate 5.00%, Alkaloid 7.92%, Steroid 16.23% and Terpenoid 11.85% in terms of their relative abundance. Steroid was found to contain the highest amount followed by terpenoid whereas anthocyanin, epicatechin and flavones contents were in moderate amount while the rest were just little or insignificant. The high content of steroids and terpenoid in this sample leaf suggests the reason why it is used as antioxidant, anitbacteria and for masculine fertility in male.
