THE INVESTIGATION INTO EFFECT OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF BITTER KOLA STEM BARK ON HAEMATOLOGICAL PAREMETERS (PCV, MCHC, HEMOGLOBIN) USING WISTAR ALBINO RATS
Abstract
This research examines the impact of ethanol extracts of Garcinia kola on hematological parameters in Wistar albino rats. The study utilized varying doses of 100 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg to assess the effects on packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). Results indicated that the control group had the highest PCV and Hb levels, with lower doses showing minimal effects. However, medium and high doses significantly decreased PCV and Hb, suggesting potential hematoxicity. Interestingly, the high dose group exhibited an unexpected increase in MCHC, possibly indicating dehydration or compensatory mechanisms. These findings support previous research highlighting the adverse effects of high doses of plant extracts on hematological health, particularly through oxidative stress and erythropoietic impairment. Recommendations include regulating dosage guidelines for Garcinia kola consumption, conducting further studies on its mechanisms, increasing public awareness of herbal remedies, and establishing regulatory oversight for commercial products. This study provides valuable insights into the hematological implications of Garcinia kola, underscoring the importance of caution in its therapeutic use.
