ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF CITRUS MAXIMA LEAF EXTRACT ON CLINICAL ISOLATES
Abstract
This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of Citrus maxima (Shaddock) leaf extract on clinical isolates. Studies on antibacterial activities of Citrus maxima leaf were conducted using agar well diffusion method on test isolates using aqueous and ethanolic extracts. The results showed that Staphylococcus saprophiticus had the highest inhibition zone range of 20.0 mm to 8.0 mm, followed by Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with inhibition of 17.0 mm to 7.0 mm. Klebsiella pneumonia also had significant inhibition zone range range of 16.0 mm to 8.0 mm while Escherichia coli had the least inhibition zone of 14.0 mm to 6.0 mm. The ethanol extracts of Citrus maxima leaf extract revealed that Staphylococcus saprophitocus had the highest inhibition zone of 21.0 mm against 500 mg/ml of the extract, followed by Klebsiella pneumonia and Staphylococcus aureus with inhibition zone of 20.0 mm while Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli had 19.0 mm and 18.0 mm respectively. However, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli had MIC of 50 for aqueous extract. Klebsiella pneumonia and Staphylococcus saprophiticus had 45 mg/ml each. The MIC for the ethanol extract was 60 mg/ml against Escherichia coli while Klebsiella pneumonia and Staphylococcus aureus had 50 each. The minimum bacteriocidal concentration (MBC) showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa had MBC of 50, Staphylococcus aureus 62.5, Escherichia coli 62.5 antibacterial activity hence it can be used for medicinal purposes. And Klebsiella pneumonia 62.5. The leaves of Citrus maxima were observed to have.
