ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF GENDER INEQUALITY ON WOMEN DEVELOPMENT IN MAIDUGURI
Abstract
This study examines the impact of gender inequality on women’s development in Maiduguri, focusing on its implications for education, employment, political participation, and cultural norms. Utilizing data from 80 respondents through structured questionnaires, the analysis revealed significant obstacles women face due to gender disparities. Key findings highlight that gender inequality limits women's access to education and employment opportunities, while cultural and religious norms perpetuate oppressive gender roles. Socio-cultural practices, early marriage, and poverty were identified as major barriers to women’s active participation in politics and economic activities. Despite the existence of empowerment initiatives by government and non-governmental organizations, challenges such as lack of awareness, societal restrictions, and inadequate support systems hinder women's involvement in development processes. The study underscores the importance of addressing these constraints through legal frameworks, education, re-orientation, and collaboration among stakeholders. Recommendations include enacting a national gender policy, fostering women’s groups for mutual support, promoting awareness of existing initiatives, and enhancing access to education and resources to enable women’s active participation in societal development. The research advocates for collective efforts to dismantle structural barriers, fostering an equitable environment for sustainable development in Maiduguri and beyond.
