THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MASS MEDIA IN DRAWING GOVERNMENT CLOSER TO THE PEOPLE IN RURAL COMMUNITIES (A CASE STUDY OF AMAI, DELTA STATE)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the importance of mass media in drawing government closer to the people
in rural communities, with a specific focus on Amai, a rural community in Oshimili North
Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. Rural communities in Nigeria have
historically suffered from governance deficits, poor information dissemination, and political
marginalization, largely due to their limited access to mass media (Daramola, 2013). The mass
media, encompassing radio, television, newspapers, community radio, and the new digital
media, serves as a crucial conduit for governance, civic education, political participation, and
the dissemination of government policies and programmes. This project adopted a descriptive
survey research design, employing questionnaires and oral interviews as data collection
instruments. The population of the study comprised residents of Amai community, local
government officials, and media practitioners operating within Delta State. The findings reveal
that radio remains the most accessible and influential medium for the people of Amai,
significantly mediating the relationship between government and the rural populace. The study
concludes that an active, accessible, and responsible mass media is indispensable for
democratic governance, rural development, and community empowerment. Recommendations
include the establishment of community radio stations, improved electrification for television
and internet access, and increased government transparency through media engagement in
rural areas.
