Abstract

This work entitled Directing Strategies in the Production of Emotan (A Benin Heroine): An Auteurish Interpretation. Directing means expressing the dramatic text in a different language- that of physical action on stage. In preparing the play for performance, the director must give it an interpretation, he must find out the “hard core” or the central or commanding image of the play. This study uses the Stanislavski’s Theory of Empathy and Total Involvement, Meyerhold’s Theory of Biomechanics and Jerzy Growtoski’s theory of Poor Theatre. The study therefore makes use of primary and secondary source of data collection i.e. books, magazines and journals. The analysis of directing strategies in the production of Emotan: A Benin Heroine reveals significant insights into the auteurist approach adopted by its director. By examining the interplay between narrative structure and visual style, one can argue that the director employs a distinct set of techniques that not only serve to elevate Emotan's story but also reflect broader themes relevant to contemporary audiences. The use of symbolism and colour palettes, for instance, not only contextualises Emotan's historical significance but also invites viewers to engage with her legacy on a deeper emotional level. Such an approach resonates with the principles of auteur theory, which posits that a filmmaker's personal vision profoundly impacts their work. This research recommends that since an auteur perspective encourages experimentation and innovation within traditional frameworks. Directors should embrace their individual interpretations often challenge conventional norms, leading to fresh and engaging productions. This not only captivates audiences but also invites critical discourse surrounding the work, fostering a deeper appreciation for theatrical art forms.
