INVITRO-ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITIES OF SYZYGIUM CUMINI (BLACK PLUM) LEAVES EXTRACT
Abstract
Syzygium cumini, commonly referred to as black plum or simply jamun is an evergreen tropical tree of the family myrtaceae. This species has generally been highly valued for its edible fruit and pharmacological properties, among other uses as an ornamental plant. This extract, focusing on its effect on particular of tannins 4.56% and flavonoids at 3.32%. The dose-dependent protective activities of Syzygium cumini against heat-induse protein denaturation and hemolysis showed maximum protection of 66.8% and 64.8%, respectively, at 500 ug/ml. besides, the plant exhibited strong lipoxygenase inhibitory activity, whose highest test concentration reached 67.5%, though less effective when compared to the standard drug Indomethacin that recorded 92.2%. All these finding strongly indicate that Syzygium cumini possesses excellent therapeutic potential as a natural anti-inflammatory agent and, as such, should be further investigated in depth into its bioactive principles and their modes of action for possible applications in modern medicine.
