Abstract

ABSTRACT According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a drug is defined as “any substance that, when taken into an organism, may modify one or more of its functions,” while abuse refers to the harmful or excessive use of such substances in a way that is more destructive than beneficial to the individual or society. Substance abuse is a serious global problem, and its prevalence among students is on the rise (Gatin, 2005). This study aims to identify the substances commonly abused by students of Bauchi State University and examine their effects on behavior. The study covers the research design, area of study, population, sample and sampling techniques, instruments for data collection, as well as the validity and reliability of the instruments. It also explains the methods used for data collection and analysis. Substance or drug abuse involves the use of illicit drugs or the misuse of substances for mood-altering purposes (Medline Medical Encyclopedia). In Nigeria, many students are involved in one form of substance abuse or another, often due to factors such as peer influence, family problems, and other social issues. Substance abuse poses numerous dangers to students and has serious consequences for society as a whole.
