PROPOSED COMMUNITY CENTER AT KATSINA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KATSINA STATE
Abstract
This project presents the architectural design proposal for a Community Center in
Katsina Local Government Area, Katsina State, developed to meet the social,
recreational, and educational needs of the people. The center is conceived as a
multifunctional facility to enhance communal bonding, youth engagement, and
access to essential services in a culturally sensitive and environmentally responsive
manner. Based on extensive literature review and comparative case studies of both
local and international community centers, the design identifies and addresses
issues such as inadequate spatial planning, poor ventilation, weak infrastructure,
and security lapses. The final proposal integrates key facilities such as a community
hall, library, daycare, sports pitches, skill acquisition centers, and offices—
arranged through appropriate zoning to ensure functionality, accessibility, and
inclusivity. The project also incorporates sustainable design strategies including
passive ventilation, solar power generation, rainwater harvesting, and use of local
materials. Through a phased implementation plan and maintenance strategy, the
proposed community center aims to serve as a model for future development in rural
and urban areas of Katsina State.
