Abstract

This study examines the role of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the fight against corruption in Nigeria, with particular focus on Enugu State. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of the EFCC in combating corruption. Specifically, the objectives include: to determine whether the EFCC plays a significant role in the fight against corruption in Nigeria; to examine whether lack of societal cooperation affects the effectiveness of the EFCC; to investigate whether the influence of top personalities affects the performance of the EFCC; and to evaluate whether systemic disorder affects the EFCC in its anti-corruption efforts. A survey research method was adopted for the study. The researcher utilized a target population of 800 respondents and applied Taro Yamane’s formula to determine a sample size of 267 respondents. Data were collected and analysed using tables, simple percentages, and chi-square statistical tools for hypothesis testing. The findings revealed that the EFCC plays a significant role in the fight against corruption in Nigeria. However, lack of societal cooperation negatively affects its effectiveness. The study also found that the influence of top personalities hinders the performance of the EFCC, while systemic disorder affects its operations both in Enugu State and Nigeria at large. Based on these findings, the study concludes that the EFCC remains a crucial institution in combating corruption in Nigeria. It is therefore recommended that the Federal Government should provide adequate support to the EFCC in recovering looted funds. Political actors should allow the EFCC to operate independently for effective discharge of its duties. There should also be increased societal cooperation and institutional reforms to enhance the efficiency of the EFCC. Furthermore, the EFCC should maintain neutrality and ensure that all anti-corruption activities are carried out within the provisions of the law.
