THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON HYDROLOGICAL FACTORS OF THE OGUN-OSUN RIVER BASIN
Abstract
Climate change poses significant threats to water resources worldwide, and the Ogun-Osun River Basin in Nigeria is no exception. This study investigates the impacts of climate change on hydrological factors in the Ogun-Osun River Basin, with a focus on temperature, precipitation, stream flow, and water quality. Using historical climate data (1982-2012) and projected climate scenarios (2013-2042), we employ Mann-Kendall trend analysis, linear regression, and change point detection to analyze changes in hydrological processes. Results reveal significant trends in temperature increase, precipitation variability, and altered stream flow patterns.
Specifically, our findings indicate: A rising temperature trend of 0.12°C/decade, increased precipitation intensity, leading to more frequent floods, shifts in stream flow regimes, affecting water availability, changes in water quality parameters, impacting aquatic ecosystems.
Our study highlights the vulnerability of the Ogun-Osun River Basin to climate change, emphasizing the need for adaptive management strategies to mitigate these impacts. The research contributes to the understanding of climate-hydrology interactions in West Africa and informs decision-making for sustainable water resource management in the region.
