Abstract

ABSTRACT The research focused on the synthesis and characterization of mixed ligand complexes of Co(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II) using dimethylglyoxime (DMG) and benzoic acid as ligands. Transition metal complexes are significant in coordination chemistry due to their unique chemical, physical, and biological properties. In this study, metal salts of cobalt(II), copper(II), and nickel(II) were reacted with DMG and benzoic acid under controlled conditions to form stable mixed ligand complexes. The formation of the complexes was indicated by the appearance of colored precipitates, which varied with the type of metal: pink/red for Co(II), blue/green for Cu(II), and red/orange for Ni(II). The synthesized complexes were isolated by filtration, washed, dried, and characterized based on their physical properties such as color, solubility, and melting point. The study demonstrated that DMG, a nitrogen-donor ligand, and benzoic acid, an oxygen-donor ligand, could coordinate simultaneously to the metal ions, producing stable mixed ligand complexes with enhanced chemical and thermal stability. The findings confirmed the significance of ligand type, metal ion, and reaction conditions in the formation and stability of coordination compounds. This research contributes to a better understanding of mixed ligand complex chemistry and provides a foundation for potential applications in catalysis, material science, and analytical chemistry.
