Abstract

Abstract This project investigates the mapping of gully erosion channels in the Ukwaja to Obiga Junction area using the ground survey method with the Total Station. The primary aim is to generate baseline data that will aid in understanding the extent and characteristics of the gully erosion, which poses significant environmental and infrastructural challenges to the region. The objectives of the study include capturing accurate field data, establishing reference points at 20-meter intervals along both edges and the center of the gully, and producing a detailed map of the erosion channel. The methodology involved precise ground surveys to capture elevation and coordinate data across the erosion site. This data was then processed to generate a baseline, which provided a comprehensive understanding of the gully's depth, width, and overall morphology. The results highlighted the severe nature of the gully erosion, characterized by steep slopes and substantial sediment displacement. The produced map offers critical insights for stakeholders in land management, urban planning, and environmental conservation. This study concludes that effective erosion control measures, such as vegetation restoration and the construction of check dams, are essential for mitigating further degradation of the area. Additionally, it recommends regular monitoring and community engagement as vital components in sustaining these efforts. The findings from this research contribute to the broader understanding of gully erosion dynamics and provide a foundation for future erosion control strategies in similar environments.
