Abstract

This study examines the role of community radio in promoting local culture and education, with particular focus on Diamond FM. Community radio stations serve as vital platforms for grassroots communication, enabling the preservation and dissemination of indigenous knowledge, traditions, and educational content tailored to the needs of local populations. The research adopts a descriptive survey design to assess how Diamond FM contributes to cultural promotion and educational development within its coverage area. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and program analysis to evaluate listener engagement, content relevance, and the station’s impact on community awareness. The findings reveal that Diamond FM plays a significant role in showcasing local languages, cultural practices, music, and festivals, thereby fostering cultural identity and unity among listeners. In addition, the station provides educational programming on health, agriculture, civic responsibilities, and literacy, contributing to the overall development of the community. However, the study also identifies challenges such as limited funding, inadequate technical facilities, and restricted coverage, which hinder the station’s effectiveness. Despite these constraints, Diamond FM remains a crucial tool for community empowerment and social development. The study concludes that community radio is an effective medium for promoting local culture and education, and recommends increased support from government and private stakeholders to enhance its capacity and reach. This will ensure sustained cultural preservation and improved access to informal education at the grassroots level.
