Abstract

ABSTRACT 8 Phoenix dactylifera, commonly known as date or date palm, is a floweringplant species in the palm family, Arecaceae, cultivated for its ediblesweetFruit. Date fruit of date palm can be considered as an ideal foodthat provides a wide range of essential nutrients with many potential healthbenefits. The most important components of dates are the carbohydrates in particular sugars, which can constitute up to 78%andprovide a readily available source of energy to the human body. Thepurpose of the research work is to carry out a photochemical screeningon date seed by using methanol and ethanol extract. The dates (Phoenixdactylifera L.) were procured from Oja Oba market Ilorin, KwaraState. Seeds were separated from date fruits and dried in shadow. The driedseeds and dried fruit were ground to powder. Preliminary photochemical screening of methanolic and ethanolic extract of datefruit and seed showed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, proteins.cardiac glycoside, proteins, steroids and sapiens. antineutrinosand steroids were also present. This research was carried out ingeneral laboratory, Bartholomew College of Health Technology
