COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE BETWEEN BIOLOGY STUDENTS TAUGHT WITH MODELS/CHART AND THOSE TAUGHT WITHOUT MODELS/CHART IN KATSINA STATE NIGERIA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study investigated the comparative analysis on academic performance between Biology
students taught with models/chart and those taught without model/chart in Katsina State Nigeria.
Two objectives guided the study and these are to: Compare the difference between mean
score of concepts with model and chart in some secondary schools in Katsina State. Find the mean score of concepts without model and chart in some secondary schools in Katsina State. Beneath these objectives are two corresponding hypotheses, one of which is to compare the mean score of male and female Biology students taught using model and chart in some secondary schools in Katsina State. A simple random sampling technique was used to select two secondary schools in Katsina metropolis. The study was a pre-test, post-test, experimental and control group design. The sample are SSI Biology students. Two validated instruments were used for data collection, seventy students answered the questionnaire; mean and standard deviations while hypotheses were tested using t-test statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The result revealed that (1) Biology students taught using model/chart experimentally displayed more positive significant difference in the mean score than those taught without model/chart (control) group. (2) There was a significant difference in the mean score of male and female Biology students taught using model/chart experimentally displayed more positive significant difference in the mean score than those taught without model/ chart (control) group. Based on the findings it was recommended that Biology teachers in the post primary schools in Katsina State should adopt more careful and student-friendly methods of teaching Biology concepts; therefore, Katsina State school managers, teachers, and Government should consider and promote the use of model/chart in teaching Biology. Ministry of Education should also emphasize the inclusion of models/chart into teaching-learning Biology in our senior secondary schools.
