Abstract

This study critically examines the role of radio drama in fostering community development, using the Opyee Nyadida radio program as a case study within the lgede community of Benue State, Nigeria. Recognizing radio's enduring significance as a medium for information dissemination, education, and cultural preservation, this research highlights how Opyee Nyadida leverages storytelling to address societal challenges. The study adopts a qualitative research approach, employing content analysis of selected episodes to explore themes such as parental responsibility, economic hardship, moral education, youth development, and cultural identity. Findings reveal that Opyee Nyadida effectively promotes awareness and behavioral change by embedding moral lessons within entertaining narratives. The research also underscores the program's role in preserving the lgede language and traditions while advocating for progressive social change. However, the study identifies gaps in the program's accessibility and audience engagement, suggesting improvements such as expanding broadcast reach, incorporating digital platforms, and enhancing interactivity. The research concludes that radio drama remains a vital tool for community development and recommends strategies for optimizing its impact within rural settings.
