Abstract

ABSTRACT This project presents the design and implementation of a photovoltaic (PV)-integrated energy storage system developed to enhance the operational reliability of the center lathe machine in the Machine Tool Workshop of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi. The work was driven by the challenge of inconsistent grid supply and frequent power interruptions, which disrupt machining operations and reduce workshop productivity. To address this problem, a standalone PV-battery system was designed using a 3.5 kW PV array comprising ten 250 W polyocrystalline modules, two 60 A MPPT charge controllers, a 48 V, 1,100 Ah tubular lead-acid battery bank providing one day of autonomy, and a 3.5 kVA hybrid inverter. The methodology involved detailed load analysis, solar resource assessment, systematic system sizing using standard engineering procedures, followed by installation and performance evaluation under real operating conditions. The system achieved an overall efficiency of approximately 80%, with the PV array generating 33.8 kWh per day (96.6% of its design value), a battery round-trip efficiency of 90%, and an inverter efficiency of 93%, demonstrating that the PV-integrated energy storage system provides a technically sound and reliable solution for powering industrial equipment in environments with unstable or insufficient grid supply.
