PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING, PROXIMATE COMPOSITION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF OIL FROM DOUM PALM SEED( HYPHAENE THEBAICA)
Abstract
This study comprehensively analysed the phytochemical constituents proximate composition, and oil extraction characteristics of doum palm seeds (Hyphaene thebaica) The phytochemical screening revealed the present of Alkaloids, flavonoid, Tannins, saponins.Proximate analysis revealed high carbohydrate content (37.03 ± 2.67%), substantial dietary fibre (12.71 ± 1.05%), moderate protein (22.33 ± 1.94%), and low moisture content (7.15 ± 0.42%). Phytochemical screening confirmed presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, validating traditional medicinal applications. Oil extraction yielded 4.45% through solvent extractionan.Oil characterisation revealed high saponification 198.7 ± 3.1 mg KOH/g, low to moderate peroxide 3.8 ± 0.6 meq O₂/kg. The refractive index and specific gravity were found to be 1.47 and 0.9 respectively. The study demonstrates doum palm seeds potential as a valuable indigenous resource for nutritional security and rural economic development. The comprehensive data provides baseline information supporting evidence-based utilisation strategies and commercial development opportunities.
