ANALYSIS OF KWAMTENG DEITY OF GEOMAI PEOPLE IN SHENDAM LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, PLATEAU STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research critically examines the Kwamteng deity as a cultural and spiritual institution
among the Goemai people of Shendam Local Government Area, Plateau State. Positioned at the
intersection of tradition and communal governance, the Kwamteng cult functions as a moral
regulator, judicial authority, and custodian of indigenous identity. Through ethnographic
methods and oral histories, the study explores how Kwamteng rituals reinforce social cohesion,
transmit generational values, and mediate challenges posed by modernization. The findings
highlight the enduring relevance of indigenous belief systems in shaping communal resilience
and cultural continuity.
