AN ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF MONEY POLITICS ON THE 2023 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION IN BAUCHI STATE”
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of money politics on the 2023 gubernatorial election in Bauchi State, Nigeria. Money politics, characterized by vote-buying, financial inducements, and undue monetary influence, has increasingly undermined electoral integrity and democratic governance in Nigeria. The research adopts a descriptive survey design and utilizes both primary and secondary data sources. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to a sample population comprising registered voters, election observers, party agents, and electoral officials across selected local government areas in Bauchi State. The study found that money politics significantly influenced voter behavior, compromised electoral fairness, and contributed to political apathy among citizens. It also revealed that economic hardship, weak electoral institutions, and a lack of political accountability are key drivers of money-induced elections. The findings underscore the urgent need for institutional reforms, voter education, and stronger enforcement of electoral laws to safeguard the democratic process. The study concludes that without curbing the menace of money politics, the credibility of future elections in Bauchi State and Nigeria at large remains at risk.
