Abstract

This study was undertaken to investigate the "Effect of Guided Inquiry Teaching Method on Academic Performance of Biology Students Among Senior Secondary Schools in Katsina Metropolis".The study had two objectives, with two research questions that guided the study.two null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Related literature was reviewed. Quasi-Experimental research design was employed for the study. The population of the study was 2,682 Biology students and the sample size was 338 respondents. Systematic sampling and simple random sampling techniques were used in drawing the sample size with aid the of Research advisors (2006) table. The data were collected by using The Biology Concepts Achievement Test (BCAT). Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and mean scores were used to analyze demographic variables and answer research questions. Independent t-test was used to lest the stated null hypotheses. all the null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The Findings among others revealed that students exposed to guided inquiryteaching method achieved significantly higher than the students who were taught using discussion method.that male students taught Biology concepts using guided inquiry teaching method achieved the learned concepts slightly better than their counterpart's femae students. The study makes some recommendations Teachers should adopt the use of guided inquiry method in teaching of Biology concept more than discussion method, Both guided inquiry and discussion methods are good in handling Biology classes.
