Abstract

This research work examined the impact of effective corporate governance practices on the performance metrics of Nigerian bank from 2015-2024 with reference to United Bank for Africa (UBA). In furtherance to the research work, Ex-post facto research method was used. Data relating to corporate governance practices and a performance metrics of the sampled bank were extracted from the financial statements. The relationship between the hypothetical variables was tested using regression analysis. It was discovered that the number of directors on a board significantly affects the financial performance of a bank, and the overall model indicates that board composition, particularly the presence of non-executive directors, plays a significant role in determining profit, etc. It was recommended that bank should optimize their board size to ensure effective decision-making and improve financial performance, carefully evaluates the composition of their boards, particularly the balance between executive and non-executive directors, and should focus on other aspects of board composition and governance that might have a more significant impact on financial performance.
