Abstract

ABSTRACT Intestinal testinal parasitic infections remain a major public health concern in Nigeria, particularly in rural communities where sanitation and hygiene practices are poor. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Trichuris trichiura among residents of Gadau community, Bauchi State. A total of 115 stool samples were collected from participants across different age groups (4–60 years) and examined microscopically using formol-ether concentration techniques and floatation techniques.Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine associations between infection and demographic factors such as age and sex. The results revealed a zero prevalence (0.0%) of T. trichiura among all age groups and both sexes examined. Males (30 participants) and females (85 participants) were all negative for the parasite. Similarly, no age group recorded infection. However, other intestinal parasites were detected, Ascaris spp (6.1%), Hookworms (2.6%), Paragonimus spp(3.5%),Entamoeba coli (3.5%),Giardia duodenalis (2.6%),Flukes (3.5), with an overall prevalence of 21.7% (25/115), indicating that intestinal parasitism remains a significant health concern in the area. This study provides information on T. trichiura and other helminths in Gadau community and highlights the need for continued surveillance, community-wide deworming, and integrated control strategies combining water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) improvements.
