Abstract

Abstract This study investigates the prevalence of common eye disorders among young people attending Tanke Primary Health Care Center in Ilorin. The research aims to identify the most frequently occurring eye conditions, examine their causes, and assess the level of awareness and preventive practices among the youth. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and data were collected through structured questionnaires and clinical records from selected respondents within the study area. Findings from the study revealed that common eye disorders among young individuals include refractive errors, conjunctivitis, and allergic eye conditions, largely influenced by factors such as poor hygiene, prolonged screen exposure, environmental conditions, and limited awareness of eye care practices. The study also showed that many respondents had inadequate knowledge of preventive measures and delayed seeking professional eye care services. Based on these findings, the study concludes that eye disorders are prevalent among youth in the study area and pose a significant public health concern. It recommends increased awareness campaigns, regular eye screening programs, and improved access to affordable eye care services to promote early detection and effective management of eye conditions among young people.
