EFFECT OF MALNUTRITIONON ON STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ITAS GADAU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF BAUCHI STATE
Abstract
ABSTARCT
This study investigates the effect of malnutrition on students’ academic performance in
secondary schools within Itas-Gadau Local Government Area of Bauchi State. Malnutrition,
which includes undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, poses a major barrier to
effective learning by impairing cognitive development, concentration, memory retention, and
overall school performance. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, using structured
questionnaires and interviews to collect data from students, teachers, and health personnel
across selected schools. The findings revealed a significant relationship between poor
nutritional status and low academic achievement. Malnourished students were more likely to
experience fatigue, reduced attention span, frequent illnesses, and increased absenteeism, all
of which negatively impacted their classroom performance. The study concludes that
addressing malnutrition is essential for improving educational outcomes and recommends the
introduction of school feeding programs, health education campaigns, and regular medical
assessments in schools to combat the issue.
