Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the role of traditional rulers in maintaining peace among the inhabitants of Miya community in Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State. Traditional institutions in Nigeria, though not constitutionally vested with formal political power, continue to play a significant role in grassroots governance, conflict resolution, and social cohesion. The research explores how traditional rulers in Miya community employ customary laws, mediation techniques, and community engagement to prevent disputes and promote harmony among diverse ethnic and religious groups. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with data collected through questionnaires. A sample of 384 questionnaire were used. Findings reveal that traditional rulers serve as credible mediators in land disputes, marital issues, chieftaincy disagreements, and inter￾group conflicts, relying on cultural values and communal dialogue. However, challenges such as political interference, limited formal recognition, and inadequate resources constrain their effectiveness. The study concludes that strengthening the capacity and authority of traditional rulers, while fostering collaboration between them and government security agencies, can significantly enhance peacebuilding in Miya community. Recommendations include policy reforms to integrate traditional institutions into local governance frameworks, provision of training on modern conflict resolution techniques, and sustained community sensitization on peaceful coexistence. Keywords: Traditional rulers, peacebuilding, conflict resolution, Miya community, customary laws, community mediation, social cohesion, grassroots governance.
