Abstract

Experiment was carried out at Teaching and Research Farm, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, to determine the effect of phosphorus fertilizer on the growth, fruit yield and nutritional quality of okra varieties. Single super phosphate was used as a source of phosphorus. Three varieties of okra were used (NHAe 47-4, Aresewosun, Iwo-agboin-in) and five treatments of phosphorus (0,15,30,45 and 60Kg25/ha). The 3×5 factorial experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicate. The growth parameters (plant height and number of leaves) and nutritional quality were assessed. The data collected were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and significant means separated using Least significant difference (LSD) at 5% probability level. Result obtained showed that the growth parameter increased as the plant aged. Okra planted with the fertilizer rate of 60Kg25/ha) significantly improved the growth parameters. Arora et al., (1991) compared the growth and yield of a new okra cultivar, Punjab Padmini, with that of cv. Pusa Sawni grown under variable N (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg/ha) fertilizer application. They stated that plant height, number of pods, pod size and total green pod yield were significantly improved by the application of 90 kg N/ha and 60 kg P/ha which is in collide with this study.
