Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to identify the factors influencing farmers' decision to adopt hybrid maize in Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi state, Nigeria. A multistage random sampling technique was used to collect data from 120 maize farmers from four randomly selected wards of the LGA in 2024. Maximum likelihood estimate of Logit Model was used to determine the factors influencing farmers' adoption of hybrid maize. The results indicate that the mean predicted probability of hybrid maize adoption were influenced by respondents age (-0.01), farm size (0.02), education (0.01) and extension contact (0.02), farming experience (0.02), household size (0.01) and, farm size (0.02) had significant influence on participation in hybrid maize. While only marital status (-0.03) is negative and non-significant and so had no influence. This study recommended that there is a need for special training, seminars, field demonstrations and technical support for the maize farmers especially on hybrid maize production. The extension program should be intended for the less educated farmers. In addition, credit facilities particularly the procedure for loan should be made simple to improve the adoption rate of hybrid maize in the study area.
