Abstract

This study investigates the effect of socioeconomic factors on the dropout rates of secondary school students in Talata Mafara Local Government Area, Zamfara State, Nigeria. Secondary education is a crucial stage in personal and national development, providing essential skills for economic and social advancement. However, high dropout rates hinder the potential of young individuals and contribute to persistent socio-economic challenges within the community. This research focuses on key socioeconomic variables such as household income, parental education, cultural beliefs, and access to educational resources to understand their influence on students' decisions to leave school. A mixed-methods approach was employed, using both quantitative data from questionnaires and qualitative insights from interviews with students, parents, and educators. The study reveals that low household income, limited parental education, and certain cultural practices significantly increase the likelihood of students dropping out of school. Additionally, inadequate educational facilities and resources exacerbate the dropout problem by reducing students' motivation and access to quality learning. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions, including financial assistance programs, community awareness initiatives, and improved resource allocation to schools. By addressing these socioeconomic barriers, policymakers and educational stakeholders can work toward reducing dropout.
