Abstract

his study examines the role of youth in political violence during the 2019 gubernatorial elections in Benue State, Nigeria. Elections in Nigeria have often been characterized by varying degrees of violence, with young people frequently identified as both perpetrators and victims. The 2019 gubernatorial election in Benue State, which saw the re-election of Governor Samuel Ortom, occurred within a broader context of political tension, economic hardship, and insecurity in the state . The research investigates the factors that contributed to youth involvement in political violence, including unemployment, poverty, political manipulation, and weak institutional control. Studies indicate that political elites often exploit economically disadvantaged youths to perpetrate violence for electoral gains . Additionally, existing insecurity and a culture of violence in Benue State further created an enabling environment for such activities. Using qualitative and descriptive research methods, the study analyzes the nature, causes, and effects of youth-driven political violence during the elections. Findings reveal that youth participation in violence was largely influenced by socio-economic vulnerability, lack of political orientation, and the deliberate mobilization of youths by political actors. The consequences included voter intimidation, electoral malpractice, loss of lives and property, and a decline in democratic credibility. The study concludes that addressing youth political violence requires comprehensive strategies such as youth empowerment, employment generation, political education, and stricter enforcement of electoral laws. It recommends that government and stakeholders should prioritize inclusive governance and create opportunities that reduce the susceptibility of youths to political exploitation.
