AN ANALYSIS OF NEWSPAPER COVERAGE OF KIDNAPPING IN ADAMAWA STATE: A STUDY OF SELECTED NATIONAL DAILIES
Abstract
The study investigates how selected Nigerian national newspapers cover kidnapping incidents in Adamawa State, focusing on frequency, prominence, depth, and framing. Using quantitative content analysis, 95 articles were sampled from a population of 2,040 articles across newspapers such as The Punch, Daily Trust, and The Guardian. Findings show that while kidnapping is frequently reported, coverage lacks depth, is often placed in less prominent sections, and focuses more on criminality than root causes. The study concludes that reporting is inconsistent and recommends more investigative, sustained, and analytical journalism.
