THE EFFECTIVENESS OF FISCAL POLICY IN PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study investigates the effectiveness of fiscal policy in promoting sustainable
economic growth in Nigeria between 2001 and 2020. The research focuses on how
government recurrent and capital expenditures, as well as government revenue,
impact Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Using various econometric
techniques, including unit root tests and regression analysis, the study examines the
relationship between these fiscal policy variables and economic growth. The results
reveal that recurrent expenditure has a positive but insignificant effect on economic
growth, while capital expenditure and government revenue exhibit a significant
relationship with GDP. The findings suggest that improving the efficiency of
government spending and revenue generation can enhance sustainable growth in
Nigeria.
