OCCURRENCE OF CYSTIC ECHINOCOCCOSIS IN DOGS FROM HOUSEHOLDS AND VETERINARY FACILITIES IN IBADAN, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study is aimed to determine the prevalence of Cystic Echinococcus in dogs from households and veterinary facilities in Ibadan. Five different breeds of dogs were evaluated. A total number of 78 dogs were examined out of which, majority of the dogs sampled belonged to the age groups of 5 years and above (38.50%) while least sampled dogs were between 3-4 years of age (24%).Sex was equally distributed between male and female. The samples were collected in four (4) household and four (4) veterinary facilities, with Omi Adio households having the highest sample percentage (21.80%), followed by Oyo state veterinary hospital (17.90%), Oluyole pet care (12.80%), FCAH&PT and Orbit vet clinic (11.50% each), Apata Market (9.00%), the least was in Odo Ona (6.40%).This study revealed that there is considerable burden of Echinococcocus granulosis in canines presented at veterinary hospital and this is a significant public health importance because of the position of dogs in the lifecycle of the parasite. Also, cystic echinococcosis is more prevalent in exotic breeds of dogs like Boerboel because of it is statistically significance and association between the prevalence of Cystic Echinococcus and age, sex, breed and location is highly significant.
