EXAMINE THE SOCIO -ECONOMIC FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO HIGH DIVORCE RATE IN DAMBAM LOCAL GOVERNMENT, BAUCHI STATE .

ABSTRACT This research work investigates the socioeconomic factors associated with divorce in Dambam Local government Divorce can be define as the process of terminating marital union, it usually entails the canceling or recognizing of the legal duties or responsibilities of marriage, thus dissolving the bonds of matrimony between a married couples under the rule of law of a particular state. The problem of divorce became one of the major social vices bedeviling nearly every society in Nigeria, Dambam Local government is not an exception, the problem of divorce in Dambam Local government are as a result of difference is socioeconomic status, and financial problems. Since these problems are increasing in the Dambam Local government there is need for this research to investigate and profound a proper way out to solve the problems. Based on empirical findings, three research questions such as what are are the public view or perception of divorce in Gombe metropolis, what are the social and economic factors of divorce in Dambam Local government,and what are the effects of divorce on family members and three research objectives were raised which are to examine the public view/perception of divorce in Dambam Local government,to investigate the causes of divorce and to identify the effects of divorce on family members, these were raised in order to guide the study. Using simple random sampling techniques and stratified sampling , a sample of 100 respondents was drown from five (3) residential addresses which include Tudun wada Dawaki and Pantami. The open and close ended research administered questionnaires was used for data collection. The research was based on quantitative data was analyzed with aids of SPSS and presented with the used of frequencies and percentages, and with the few used of qualitative method to analyzed the data obtained from the study. One of the major effects of divorce obtained by this research findings was that divorce affect the child upbringing whether psychologically, socially and or emotionally, it create chaos in family, lost of family integrity as well as economic depression.. The research study recommended that Government should enough rehabilitation and reformation facilities specifically for the divorce wife and children in order to reform and rehabilitate them in their quest for coping strategies so as to be able to readjust them selves in to the social mainstream if the society. Government also should create an awareness campaign to enlighten people about the effects of divorce on individuals and society at large and reorient them about the importance of marriage stability. There should be a marriage counseling unit of the local government which has to complement the efforts of other religious bodies, NGOs and civil societies which might engage in campaign activities about the importance of marriage stability.
