EFFECTS OF CARBAMAZEPINE ON KIDNEY USING ANIMAL MODEL
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the nephrotoxic effects of carbamazepine, a commonly prescribed
anticonvulsant, using wistar rats as animal models. Carbamazepine is widely used for the treatment
of epilepsy and bipolar disorder , but its potential adverse effects on renal function are not fully
understood . In this experiments, male wistar rats were administered carbamazepine over a
specified period, with dosages reflective of therapeutic levels in humans. Kidney function was
assessed through biomarkers, histopathological analysis, and the examination of renal tissues for
signs of damage or dysfunction, The results indicate significant changes in kidney structure and
function, suggesting that prolonged carbamazepine administration may lead to nephrotoxicity.
This study underscores the need for careful monitoring of renal health in patients undergoing long-
term carbamazepine therapy and highlights the importance of further research into the mechanisms
underlying its renal effects.
