EVALUATION OF THE ANXIOLYTC EFFECTS OF ETHANOL LEAF EXTRACT OF GUIERA SENEGALENSIS IN MICE USING OPEN FIELD TEST(OFT)
Abstract
Anxiety disorders are among the most common, or frequently reoccurring mental
disorders. They encompass a group of conditions that share extreme or pathological
anxiety as the principal disturbance of mood or emotional imbalance. This study
evaluated the anxiolytic effects of Guiera senegalensis ethanol leaf extract using
open field test (OFT) on anxiety induced by ketamine. The phytochemical screening
and LD50 determination of the extract were conducted using standard protocols. Guiera senegalensis ethanol leaf extract in this work, revealed the presence of
alkaloids, saponins, glycosides and tannins flavonoids whereas steroid is absent. The LD50 value of the extract was estimated to be above 5000 mg/kg body weight, indicating relative safety. statistical analysis revealed a significant dose dependent
anxiolytic effect of the Guiera senegalensis ethanol leaf extract (1500,750 and 3750
mg/kg) compared to ketamine only treated group. This finding suggests that Guiera
senegalensis ethanol leaf extract possesses promising therapeutic potential in
mitigating anxiety induced by ketamine.
