Abstract

This study assesses the socio-economic impacts of gully erosion at Accountant General Idah region of Northern Central Nigeria. Gully erosion, a significant environmental issue, has led to severe land degradation, displacement of communities, and loss of livelihood in the affected areas. The research aimed to explore how the erosion has influenced the socio-economic activities of the local population, including agriculture, infrastructure, and living standards. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, and secondary sources, and were analyzed to understand the extent of damage and its consequences. The findings revealed that the erosion has resulted in substantial agricultural losses, destruction of homes, disruption of transportation, and an overall decline in economic opportunities. In addition, the community’s access to social services, such as education and healthcare, has been severely affected. These impacts have exacerbated poverty levels and reduced the quality of life in the region. The research study concludes that immediate and sustained interventions are necessary to mitigate the effects of gully erosion in Idah. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the government should prioritize investment in erosion control measures and implement policies aimed at environmental conservation in the Idah area. Furthermore, local authorities should engage in community-based initiatives to raise awareness about the causes and prevention of gully erosion.
