PRODUCTION OF CELLULOSIC ETHANOL FROM SAWDUST
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The research work was aimed at production of cellulosic ethanol from sawdust which in effects to minimize energy cost and substituting nonrenewable energy by using renewable resources. It employed dilute acid hydrolysis, because it is easy and of productive process. The experiment was designed by Central Composite Design (CCD) with three factor (Concentration, temperature and time) and triplicate run, the acid concentration was varied from 1.5 to 2.5%, hydrolysis temperature was varied from 110 to 130°C, and hydrolysis time was varied from 30 to 90minutes. The maximum experimental observed yield of 48.2% at the operating process variable at a temperature of 120°C, acid concentration of 1.5%, and a hydrolysis time of 60 minutes. However, high acid concentration as well as increasing hydrolysis time causes a decline in the ethanol yield. From this, it was concluded that the selected model was adequate to fit the data of response variable.
