Abstract

ABSTRACT This study explores the pervasive issue of child trafficking in Nigeria, focusing on the legal and institutional frameworks, challenges faced, and implications for effective enforcement. Child trafficking remains a critical concern globally, with Nigeria being a significant hotspot for this heinous crime. The research is conducted through a doctrinal approach, analyzing existing legal provisions, institutional setups, and historical contexts to understand the complexities surrounding child trafficking in Nigeria. The research problem addressed in this study is the alarming rate of child trafficking in Nigeria, exacerbated by factors such as lack of legal enforcement, economic disparities, inadequate institutional capacity, cross-border trafficking, lack of awareness and education, and corruption. These challenges contribute to the perpetuation of child trafficking networks and hinder efforts to combat this illicit trade effectively. The study seeks to answer several research questions aimed at unraveling the root causes, forms, and effects of child trafficking in Nigeria. By examining the legal and institutional frameworks in place, including both domestic and international provisions, a comprehensive analysis is presented to highlight gaps and areas for improvement in combating child trafficking. Governmental and non-governmental agencies play crucial roles in addressing this issue, but limitations exist due to various factors hindering their effectiveness. The significance of this study lies in its potential to inform policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organizations on the urgent need to address the challenges facing child trafficking in Nigeria. By shedding light on the corrupt practices, lack of awareness, and economic incentives driving this illicit trade, recommendations are provided to strengthen enforcement mechanisms, enhance institutional capacity, and raise public awareness to prevent and combat child trafficking effectively.
