THE EFFECTS OF SINGLE PARENTAL OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY INBAUCHI METROPOLIS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Juvenile delinquency has emerged as one of the most pressing social issues confronting many urban centers in Nigeria, and Bauchi Metropolis is not exempted. Increasing reports of theft, drug abuse, and other antisocial behaviors among youths in the area have become a source of concern to parents, educators, security agencies, and the government. Despite various interventions by law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders, the incidence of juvenile delinquency appears to be on the rise. This study seeks to examine the relationship between single parenthood and juvenile delinquency in Bauchi Metropolis, determine the effects of single parenting on children’s social behavior, and explore possible solutions to mitigate juvenile delinquency in the area.Social Bond Theory was used as the underpinning model. Descriptive survey design was used. The population comprised 1400 religious leaders, community leaders, teachers, parents, security agencies and policymakers dealing with delinquent activities in the study area. A sample of 302 respondents was obtained using Krejcie and Morgan’s sample size table. Probability sampling was employed using multistage, purposive and simple random sampling techniques. Questionnaire and interview were used as methods for data collection. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study revealed that, single-parent households significantly influence juvenile delinquency in Bauchi Metropolis. Lack of supervision, economic hardship, and peer influence were found to be major drivers of delinquent behavior among children raised by single parents. The strong support for solutions demonstrates the community’s belief in preventive and corrective measures. Notably, religious and moral education was rated highly, reflecting the cultural and religious values of Bauchi society. It was recommended that government should introduce social welfare and child support programs to reduce the economic burden on single parents.
