Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the effects of food insecurity on the nutritional status and health of children and adolescents in Gadau Settlement, Bauchi State, Nigeria. Utilizing a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 147 respondents aged 1 to 14 years through structured questionnaires. The findings revealed that 66% of households experienced food insecurity, with many children reporting instances of hunger, skipping meals, and inadequate access to balanced diets. Anthropometric measurements indicated concerning trends in nutritional status, with an average height of 118.4 cm and weight of 25.7 kg, alongside visible signs of malnutrition in 22.4% of participants. The study highlighted the interplay between food insecurity and multiple health outcomes, demonstrating that financial constraints significantly hindered access to nutritious food. A majority of families reported relying on food assistance, yet many went without adequate food due to financial limitations. The results underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve food security and nutritional education in the community. The study concludes that addressing these issues is vital for enhancing the health and well-being of children and adolescents, ultimately contributing to breaking the cycle of poverty and malnutrition.
