WOMEN SUBJUGATION AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN NIGERIAN HOME VIDEOS: A CASE STUDY OF KNOCKING ON HEAVEN’S DOOR. DIRECTED BY DESMOND ELLIOT.
Abstract
Violence against women and the girl child has lived in our homes for a long time now, existing
in diverse forms and types. It has strangled the self-esteem of a large number of women and children,
thereby leaving immediate injuries, long term mental illness, sexual and reproductive health problems,
overall reduced or lost educational, employment, and political participation opportunities. Apart from
physical effects of domestic violence on the survivors, it also leaves children who witness violence
between parents at greater risk of being violent in their future relationships. Violence against women
reduces productivity and drains public budgets, as women are in most scenarios sidelined and/or
neglected when it comes to nation building; in which case they contribute little or nothing at all both
in public and in their matrimonial homes.
To this end, this research work has tried to unveil the types, causes, resultant effects and also
recommended steps that may help in curtailing the menace perpetrated against the women folk by the
domineering male counterparts.
