GROUNDWATER EXPLORATION FOR POTABLE WATER IN EBENEZER SCHOOL, AYEKA, OKITIPUPA, ONDO STATE
Abstract
This project was carried out to provide a reliable source of potable groundwater for Ebenezer School, located in Mama Nigeria, Ayeka, Okitipupa, Ondo State. The school suffers from an acute lack of safe and consistent water supply, which poses health risks and disrupts the smooth running of academic and domestic activities within the institution. To solve this problem, a geophysical investigation was carried out using electrical resistivity methods, with the Schlumberger vertical electrical sounding (VES) technique employed to assess the subsurface conditions and determine groundwater potential.
A total of three VES points were surveyed across the study area. The results revealed varying geoelectric layers consisting of lateritic soil, sand, sandy clay, and weathered basement. These interpretations made it possible to identify areas with favorable aquifer conditions and assess the protective capacity of the overburden. Particular attention was given to the depth, resistivity, and thickness of water-bearing formations to recommend an optimal drilling location.
The study concluded with the selection of a suitable borehole site, ensuring long-term sustainability and minimal risk of contamination. The findings provide a practical solution to the school’s water needs and offer a replicable approach for groundwater development in nearby communities facing similar water scarcity challenges.
