THE EFFECTS OF ETHNIC AND RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY ON POLITICS AND GOVERNANCE IN KADUNA STATE: 2015-2023
Abstract
This study investigates the effects of ethnic and religious diversity on politics and governance in Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023. Kaduna State, known for its significant ethnic heterogeneity and near-equal Muslim-Christian population, presents a unique case for understanding the complex interplay between identity and governance. The research examines three core questions which are: how ethnic and religious diversity has shaped political and government structures, the extent to which it has affected politics, and how it has influenced governance outcomes. The study used a case study research design and got it's information from secondary sources of data and used thematic method of data analysis to analyze the research data. The findings are as follows; Firstly, the study revealed that Kaduna’s political and administrative structures are significantly shaped by efforts to accommodate its diverse ethnic and religious makeup. Mechanisms such as informal zoning, power-sharing, and group-based appointments are employed to foster inclusion and reduce tensions. Secondly, it was found that politics in Kaduna is deeply entrenched in identity affiliations. Electoral behavior is predominantly influenced by religious and ethnic considerations, with political parties often mobilizing support along these lines. Thirdly, the study established that governance processes in Kaduna are equally affected by the dynamics of ethnic and religious identity. Policy decisions, appointments, and development project distribution frequently reflect identity considerations. The study recommends amongst others; That there is a need to move beyond informal power-sharing as a result of ethnic and religions ideology toward formalized policies or legislation that ensure inclusive representation in political appointments and public service recruitment. These frameworks must balance inclusion with competence, promoting both fairness and efficiency in governance.
