EFFECT OF SODIUM PROPIONATE ON PANCREATIC LIPID PROFILE IN HIGH FAT DIET STREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED DIABETIC MALE WISTAR RATS
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus occurring as a result of hyperglycemia and insulin resistance is often linked to
pancreatic lipid metabolism alteration. Therefore, the aim of the research was to determine the effect of
sodium propionate on pancreatic lipid profile in high-fat-diet streptozotocin-induced male Wistar rats.
Thirty-two (32) male Wistar rats weighing (220 ± 20 g) were used. Diabetes was induced by intra
peritoneal administration of repeated low-doses of streptozotocin (30 mg/kg) after feeding the rats with
high-fat-diet(HFD) for eight weeks. They were randomized into four (4) groups (n=8) and were treated
for 4 weeks via oral-route of drug administration. Control (CON), Control + 200 mg/kg sodium
propionate (CON + NA PROP), Diabetic (DM) and Diabetes + 200 mg/kg sodium propionate (DM +NA
PROP). Feed and water intake were recorded daily. Body-weight and fasting-blood-sugar (FBS) were
monitored weekly. At the end of the experiment, animals were sacrificed under ketamine-anesthesia (50
mg/kg), blood was collected by cardiac-puncture and pancreas were harvested for biochemical
examination. Plasma insulin, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), total
cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG) levels. Data was expressed in Mean ± S.E.M and analyzed using
Graph-pad prism version 5.0., One-way-analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey’s post hoc
test was done. Results p
