DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF RECYCLED MODEL PLASTIC HULL
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Plastic recycling is the processing of plastic waste into new products. When performed correctly, this can reduce dependence on landfill, conserve resources and protect the environment from plastic pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Since the beginning of plastic production in the 20th century, until 2021, the world has produced some 6.3 billion tons of plastic waste, only 9% of which has been recycled, and only ~1% has been recycled more than once. Additionally, 12% was incinerated and the remaining 79% disposed of to landfill or to the environment including the sea. But in this project one can utilize the 79% of plastics that are disposed to the environment. This is the main aim and purpose is this project, reducing environmental pollution by waste plastics and still achieve another means of marine vessel construction with another form of material totally different from the ones been used these days and still maintain feasibility with the strength to weight ratio high.In the boat construction industries, other materials such as wood, metal, and fiber glass has been used but in this project we will be proving that plastics and waste plastics to be precise can be used in boat construction. The success of this project will definitely boost the maritime sector and the economy of a nation by converting waste into wealth. We ended up building a boat model of about 80cm long and 39cm beam, using the waste plastic materials HDPE to be precise. We first tried it with PET but we encountered some difficulties and then we resorted to the former which is HDPE
