APPROACHES FOR MINIMIZING CORRUPT PRACTICES IN PUBLIC PROJECT WORK IN EKITI STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study aims to examine strategies for reducing corrupt practices in public project work in Ekiti State. A literature review was conducted, and 50 structured questionnaires were distributed to quantity surveyors, builders, architects, and other industry professionals using a convenience sampling method. All 50 questionnaires were completed and analyzed using the Relative Importance Index (RII) to assess the responses. Findings indicated a high level of agreement among respondents, regardless of demographic differences, in ranking the common corrupt practices in public project work, assessing their impacts, and identifying measures for mitigation. Recommendations include rotating project personnel, implementing performance-based incentives, establishing accountability mechanisms, enforcing strict sanctions for non-compliance, offering ethics training, enforcing anti-corruption laws rigorously, enhancing transparency in procurement processes, setting up independent oversight bodies, conducting regular audits, and providing whistleblower protections as key measures to reduce corruption in public projects.
