THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF POLITICAL THUGGERY IN LERE LOCAL GOVERNMENT: A CRITICAL DISCUSS FROM ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVES
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Political thuggery has become a significant challenge to democratic governance and social stability in many parts of Nigeria, including Lere Local Government Area (LGA). This study critically examines the causes and effects of political thuggery in Lere LGA from an Islamic perspective. Using a qualitative research approach, the study explores factors such as poverty, youth unemployment, political godfatherism, and weak law enforcement as key contributors to the rise of political thugs. The effects of political thuggery, including electoral violence, disruption of social harmony, loss of lives and property, and undermining of democratic principles, are analyzed in light of Islamic teachings on justice, accountability, and ethical leadership. The study draws upon relevant Qur’anic injunctions, Hadith literature, and secondary sources to frame the discussion. Findings indicate that political thuggery is not only a socio-political problem but also a moral and ethical crisis that violates the principles of justice and communal responsibility emphasized in Islam. The study concludes with recommendations for promoting ethical political participation, youth empowerment, and adherence to Islamic values as mechanisms to curb political thuggery and foster peace and development in Lere LGA.
