Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the Impact of Welfare Scheme on the Motivation of Workers in Public Service, with specific focus on the Bauchi State Board of Internal Revenue. The central aim was to investigate how various welfare programs including health benefits, housing allowances, pension plans, and training opportunities affect workers motivation, job satisfaction, and productivity. The objectives were to examine the effect of welfare schemes on workers motivation, assess the influence of welfare programs on job satisfaction, and analyze the challenges hindering effective implementation of welfare schemes. The study employed a descriptive survey research design, with a total population of 100 employees, from which 80 were selected using stratified random sampling. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires and interviews, while secondary data were sourced from reports and literature on employee welfare. Data analysis involved descriptive and inferential statistical tools, with SPSS used for computation. The findings revealed that welfare programs significantly enhance workers motivation, organizational commitment, and productivity. A large majority of respondents affirmed that welfare benefits such as housing, medical care, and training opportunities improved their morale, reduced workplace stress, and strengthened work-life balance. Welfare initiatives were also positively linked to job satisfaction, as employees reported feeling recognized, valued, and more committed to the organization. However, challenges including inadequate funding, corruption, mismanagement, poor communication of policies, and political interference were identified as key barriers to effective implementation. The study concluded that welfare schemes play a critical role in motivating public service workers and improving organizational performance. It recommended sustaining and expanding welfare programs, ensuring adequate funding, instituting transparent monitoring mechanisms, and aligning welfare policies with employees real needs. These measures will not only enhance motivation and job satisfaction but also contribute to improved service delivery in the public section.
